Is Clay Burrowing Substrate Allright for Leos?

I have my leo on sand atm, and now know it is dangerous, so im changing the substrate, may people have said leos live on hard packed dirt and i thought about making my own hard packed clay/dirt. That excavator stuff is 30 bucks a bag where i live, so i dont want to spend that much on a 10 lb bag. I was thinking, We have clay AND dirt here in Tennessee. So, if i got the amount of dirt i needed and put boiling water in it to kill everything, and then mixed it up to form dry mud(its not liquidy, just sticky) and replaced the stuff in my terrarium with it and let it dry, would it be ok?
I know how to take care of leos, and many people say leos in pakistan/afghanistan are on hard packed soil, sand and mulch are bad for them because if they swallow it over long periods of time, it can cause an even more serious and more deadly form of impaction than just swallowing a bunch, im trying to be safe and not have to visit the vet
And i was going to let the mud dry into hard packed dirt, i was just getting it wet to conform it to the cage better.
my dad wants me to use potter’s clay which is fine with me (i can make things afterwards, i love sculpture) and it will be already clean and slightly moist :D

I don’t have any problems with the sand as long as you use the right stuff. I have no idea if your clay will work, but I’d just stick to sand and cypress mulch.

Geckos are endemic to the Pakistan/Afghanistan region. There is no clay like the mud you quote there.

Keep them safe. Mine love their hides. I have 3 adults and they all cuddle together inside this plastic rock. Then they have moist hides, and are on newspapers. You can use repti carpet for a nicer look, though
