How Are They Able to Paint Lines on Roadways With Such Precision?

I’ve never seen a road with any serious problems. It seems so consistent. What kind of equipment are modern day construction crews using that allows line painting to be done with such perfection?

Lines are put down in a couple of ways. They can be sprayed from a truck with the tanks, glass bead dispensers, and spray heads. Or they can be laid out as a plastic strip and heat sealed (melted) to the street.
If you go out and look at recently laid down stripes, you may be able to see a line through the paint where there was a string pulled taut between surveyed points – a steering mechanism (or a driver sitting on the bumper with an auxiliary wheel) followed the string.

Actually I’v noticed that in the last few years, painted lines, specially the dashed white ones, have gotten very wavy. You can look ahead and see the lines waving back and forth by perhaps 6 inches.

The are done with a truck and a spray rig attached to the side of the truck.
